The Tenor is a collection of Kaufmann recordings from between 2013 and 2020, originally appearing on albums from the period. The first half of the program is devoted to operatic hits, and these are well selected; the listener gets a good sampling of Kaufmann's effortlessly soaring quality which, combined with an easy sincerity, has indeed put him on top of the heap. The second half of the album is taken from Kaufmann's 2016 album Dolce Vita, featuring Neapolitan song classics and a few more contemporary Italian songs, including the old pop hit Volare, Nino Rota's Parla più piano (from The Godfather), and Caruso, a song written for Pavarotti during the last part of his career. This album sold quite well, so one can hardly fault Sony too much for leaning on it, but it's nevertheless a questionable choice;...
