But he recognized that even such a vocation did not exhaust all of God's gifts; married persons can acquire virtues which unmarried persons lack. Explain and illustrate. Note the absence of spiritual pride in this verse; have celibates always been so careful of others? " By attempting to become angels, men sometimes become brutes." How does this saying apply here? Explain it and illustrate. St. Paul never loses sight of the fact that men and women are human beings, with limits to their powers. Do devotional writers always keep this in mind? Many devotional books were written for those called to monastic life; why are they often unprofitable to persons living in the world? Can you illustrate? But should the danger of exaggeration tempt into laziness? What is the proper mean for most of us? How can an exceptional vocation be tested? Compare Moffatt's version. 111 Before going on with the orderly sequence of this chapter, it is necessary to read vv. 29-31; they are presupposed in St. Paul's argument from v. 8 on. Review Study 54. Now in vv. 29-31 the point is: --"The end of the world is so very near that it is scarcely worth while to change one's condition." Explain each clause in these three verses accordingly. Note especially the words " to the full" in v. 31. Why are they necessary? Such teaching is known as " interim ethic," rules for conduct in the short interim before the end of the world. There are very few other instances of such ethic in the New Testament, and the present case is unique in its rigor.
