TVT's Sullivan Years series raids the archives for live performances from the legendary variety show. Born to be Wild - Rock Classics draws from the fruitful years of 1968 and 1969, and presents selections from Vanilla Fudge, Janis Joplin, and the Band, among others. Fans will find the Sullivan Years series invaluable for its live setting and pristine, if a little thin, fidelity. The casual listener should note, however, that these recordings are a bit different from the corresponding studio recordings. Musically, the two Vanilla Fudge cuts are definite standouts. A sloppy, lurching, impossibly scuzzy version of their hit cover of "(You Keep Me) Hangin' On" makes one wonder just what ol' Ed thought about what he was witnessing, while "Shotgun" is driven forward, typically for the Fudge, by shrieking organ and a psychopathic wah-wah peddle. Elsewhere, a surprisingly lucid Janis Joplin shows off some pretty angelic singing toward the end of "Maybe," while Richie Havens turns Sullivan on to flamenco guitarist Manitas de Plata in an inspired bit of stage banter. Speaking of stage banter, here's how the "hip to the scene" Sullivan introduces a perfunctory version of "Born to be Wild": "Now for all of you teenagers, the longhaired Steppenwolf rock & rollers."
