He is to superintend the activities of others, as the president of a society is to preside over the activities of others, and as the chairman of a committee is to sit in a chair and keep others busy. The less a superintendent can do, the better, provided he gets things done. He is a general, and the other officers are his staff. He is to hold councils of war, and conduct through his subordinates his plan of campaign. Each officer in his own sphere must be made to lighten the superintendent's burdens and further the general operations of the school. And yet sometimes the officers make the superintendent's burdens heavier. They hinder the work of the school by their tardiness, their sloth, their criticisms, their jealousies, their forwardness. It often seems as if the superintendent could get along better without them. They constitute a problem, instead of helping him to solve other problems. How shall this problem of the other officers be solved? Generally the principal problem regarding the assistant superintendent is to find a use for him. He is a fifth wheel in most Sunday schools, and, like the fifth wheel that is fastened to an automobile, and is used only to substitute for a wheel when it breaks down, so the assistant superintendent in most schools comes into service only when the superintendent-wheel breaks down. That is a sad waste of good material. The assistant superintendent is, or ought to be, an able worker, and he should have a regular and important work in the school.
