How many, even in England, have lasted to this very day! And, like the Romans themselves, their roads went straight to the point. There was one great road, called the Via Egnatia, which led from Rome to the Asiatic provinces. Apollonia, whither, next to Amphipolis, Paul and Silas made their way, lay about twenty-five miles beyond Amphipolis, and Thessalonica thirty-two beyond, on this great Egnatian road. The latter was a large maritime city, the capital of the second division of Macedonia, but was allowed to keep its old laws, and was governed by its own magistrates. Every thoughtful reader of the New Testament will have observed for himself how strongly the wisdom of God was shown in His choice of those places which were meant by Him to be centres of Gospel truth. This city shared the commerce of the iEgean Sea with Corinth and Ephesus. It kept its importance throughout the middle ages, and is now the second city in European Turkey, with 70,000 inhabitants. In its modern name Saloniki, we recognise its ancient, slightly changed. The magistrates of this city (Acts xvii. 6) are called by a Greek word only found in this place. But this peculiar word is a remarkable proof of the historical correctness of St. Luke. For there still exists a ruined arch of Thessalonica, with an inscription of about this date, containing the names of the magistrates of the city, who are called by this very name, "politarchs," and whose names are like those of St. Paul's Macedonian companions.
