They not only did this, but they beat him and wounded him and then went away and left him half dead. While he was lying on the ground, too weak to get up, there happened to come a priest that way. Now the wounded man was a Jew, and the priest was a Jew also. Beside this, the priest was a minister who stayed at the temple and taught the people to obey God and love one another. Therefore we should think that the priest would surely be kind to this poor wounded Jew. But he was not; for when he came near him he pretended not to see him, and crossed over to the other side of the road and passed by. He did this because he did not want the trouble of taking care of him himself, or to pay any one else for taking care of him. After the priest had passed by, a man, called a Levite, came that way. This Levite was a Jew too; and he was one of the men who helped the priests in teaching the people to obey God and be kind to one another. Yet he did not help the wounded man either, but he passed on as the priest had done, and left him lying where he found him. But after the priest and the Levite had gone, a man who was a Samaritan came to that place. Now we have read that the Jews and the Samaritans were not friends with each other, for they had quarreled and were enemies. Therefore we should not be surprised to hear that this Samaritan had gone by without helping the wounded Jew. But he did not do so. For when he saw him he pitied him, and went to him and tied up his wounds, and poured oil and wine on them to make them well.
