Then he asked for a candle, and whilst Mrs. Sands was gone to the kitchen to light it, he explained to Frances why he had chosen her to do it. "Do you think Jemmy will ever get well 1" asked Frances, in a desponding tone, when he had finished. "Oh, I hope so; it's a bad case, but while there's life there's hope, and I have known worse." The burns extended all the way down one side, the arm, throat, and shoulder were badly burnt, and the leg and foot less so. The doctor proceeded to show Prances that the parts least burnt, he had already covered up with cotton wool to exclude the air, and this need not be removed till the parts were healed, but the parts most injured must be fomented with lotions, linseed oil, and lime water. The pain caused by removing the bandages roused Jemmy to consciousness, and Frances could scarcely bear to watch his sufferings. He cried to Frances to "take that man away, he was hurting him so," and Frances had to hold him down gently, but firmly, to prevent his starting away from the doctor's hands. "Try and bear it, Jemmy, dear, it'll soon be over," she whispered. Frances watched the doctor narrowly, wondering in her own mind whether she could bring herself to do the same. At last, to her relief, the doctor said, --"There, little man, it's all over now. You have been brave. I'll give you some medicine now to make you go to sleep and forget all about it." So saying he poured out a dose from a bottle he had brought with him, and gave it to Frances to give him. Jemmy shook his head at first, but Frances raised him a little with her arm, and he drank it...
