They stopped in the middle of the bridge, and I saw him fish out his jack-knife, and begin whittlin'. Pretty soon I saw the stage come swingin' down the Long Hill, and I sidled across the road, not wantin' to-be in the way when this was the very last minute they could be by themselves. " He came on ahead, and left her standing there in the middle of the bridge, and we climbed aboard, and as we drove off she came as far as the steps of the toll-keeper's cottage and stood there wavin' her handkerchief till a bend in the road hid her from us.
