He received his Doctorate of Dental Medicine (DMD) and Master of Science from the University of Louisville. He completed a general practice residency at the San Diego Naval Regional Medical Center and achieved the rank of lieutenant commander before leaving the Navy and setting up his private practice of dentistry in San Diego in 1976.
