This was in the fall of The matter seems, however, to have been often referred to in private conversation, if not in the public press, before this.4 It is quite certain that, whatever may have been the origin of the park idea, the beginnings of the effective movement which culminated in the establishment of the existing reservations are American and go back at least as far as 1869.
