Of one we used to speak as 'shallow scepticism '; another manages to combine extreme doubt in one direction with extreme superstition in another; but there is yet a third kind, far finer and more delicate, which regards all religions as dreams, and the Gospel as the most beautiful dream of all; a dream because it does not quite accurately correspond to the severe realities of the world, yet beautiful because it manages in some strange way to keep alive all the poetry of the soul, and to call forth all its best powers. Well, we must not be too exacting. 'Jesus said: Forbid him not; for there is no man which shall do a mighty work in My name, and be able quickly to speak evil of Me. For he that is not against us is for us.' Not a few are doing mighty works from motives prompted by the history of our Lord, though perhaps with no more articulate a faith than that of the man spoken of in this passage. They are not far from the kingdom of God; at least we may say that. But our melody is the Lord Jesus Christ, Very God and Very Man. He is the Orpheus of the primitive Church, the Ecclesiastical Music of Thomas a Kempis. He it is that moves the heart to praise and thanksgiving and all the ordered beauty of the Christian life. It is much to be able to feel the charm of the music, to 'let it flow over the soul', but it is infinitely more to reproduce it upon the strings of our own nature, the best instrument that we have. 'My songs will I make of Thy Name, ' says the Psalmist. We are not to listen only to the songs of others, but to make our own songs.
