But all the opinions and facts are reported with painstaking fairness, and so far as possible with verbal exactness. For the most of them, volume and page are preserved in manuscript notes. I BEAUTY AND BEAST I. BEAUTY AND BEAST In his essay on railway morals, Herbert Spencer complains of the supplementary branches and enterprises not contemplated in the charter of a road. He denounces these as unjust to the many small holders of the original stock, which is depreciated by the burden of additional and guaranteed stock the road is made to bear. Now, in Spencer's great evolutionary railway, from the unknowable to the unknowable--from nowhere to nowhere--embracing the whole universe of matter and mind, nothing can be regarded as supplementary, and no investor can enter a protest. But, to those of us who took some stock in Darwin's Origin of Species, it becomes a serious question how far our investment is in danger of being swamped by the philosphical extensions and appendages that are put upon the road of organic evolution. To be sure, Darwin himself hinted at some open fields of psychology in the future, and, in a subsequent work, set up a connecting ferry with the very isolated Isle of Man, and he built aesthetic bridges and stations all along the line, but it was in his usual cautious way--not in a spirit of reckless speculation.
