Caitlin and The Badger travel through the Thirteen Kingdoms, pursued by a mysterious man with red hair, who seems to defeat them at every turn. The answer to it all seems to be the Spellkey. Finding it and solving its mystery may mean destruction for the cruel rulers of the Pentacle. "Skillfully done".--Kirkus, starred review.

Ann Downer's "Spellkey Trilogy" is fascinating journey through an unusual world of strange magics and well-crafted characters. The first part of the trilogy, "The Spellkey," follows the journey of the Badger and Caitlin as they make a perilous journey to an even more perilous end, where they find that their journey was far more important than they had ever believed it to be. In "The Glass Salamander," the second part of the trilogy, Caitlin and Badger are now traveling separate roads; Badger to finish what was begun during the first book, and Caitlin to attempt the restoration of a lost kingdom. The third book, "The Books of the Keepers," continues the story of Caitlin and Badger as Caitlin tries to find the long-lost magical Books of the Keepers. Ann Downer has created a delightful world with many believable characters. The many threads of story which come together to make a whole are enjoyable to read. Indeed, there are so many threads that this book is worth more than one reading, if only to deepen the reader's understanding of the story. One particularly fun aspect of the third book is the way a few of the minor characters from earlier books become central characters who are essential to the story. The trilogy was written over a period of some years, so the first book is a rougher read than the last two. The difference between the first and the third books show Downer's progression as a writer, and a clear improvement in her style is apparent. The books themselves are interesting, fun, and the reader will most likely enjoy them very much.
