I am forever grateful that I discovered this series by Diana Franklin. I previously read the much newer Ariana Franklin books and enjoyed them, but these older ones have just blown me away. As Diana Franklin, the author achieved more depth in her writing, achieved greater character development--of multiple characters!--and wrote a broader, more compelling story. This last book in the series of three centering around Makepeace really focuses on her daughter and on the terror that was the French Revolution. I found it the best of the three, actually, with #2 a close second. I also read the last two, in particular, with an eye to current political times; the more things change, the more they don't. It was with great sadness that I finished reading the third one, knowing that there were no more; but wait, now I get to hunt for more old and out-of-print Diana Norman books!
