The Spanish Main is one of twenty-two volumes from the Time-Life book series The Seafarers. This series of books celebrates the spirit of maritime adventure, from ancient times to the twentieth century. This volume describes the adventurous and violent events that took place on the Spanish Main (the Caribbean Sea and adjacent areas) between 1519 (the arrival of Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes in Mexico) and 1697 (the French raid on Cartagena in South America).
The opening chapter portrays the Spanish conquests of the Aztec and Inca empires as well as the geographic/oceanographic setting of the Spanish Main. Chapter Two looks at English merchant and slave trader John Hawkins who tested the Spanish monopoly on the Main; this chapter also considers the African slave trade and its relationship to the Spanish Main. Chapter Three focuses on the abilities and adventures of Sir Francis Drake; he was a believer in thorough planning and was able to rebound from disappointment; this chapter also discusses the lost colony at Roanoke Island. Chapter Four describes the bloodthirsty buccaneers as well as John Esquemeling's book Buccaneers of America. British leader Henry Morgan and his exploits are the focus of Chapter Five; there is also a brief description of the sugar industry in this chapter. Jean-Baptiste du Casse, Baron de Pointis, the French sacking of Cartagena, and the Treaty of Ryswick of 1697 are the topics of the final chapter.
Author Peter Wood has capably portrayed this era of intrigue, carnage, and plunder; the rivalry among Spain, the Netherlands, France, and England is an underlying theme of this book as well as the competition between Protestants and Catholics. As with other books in this series, numerous illustrations supplement the narrative; a detailed map of the Spanish Main (on both the front and back endpapers) assists readers as they learn about the marauders who made seaborne raids on the centers of Spanish wealth in the New World. A bibliography and index are included. This is one of the better books in this series and I give it a strong recommendation.
