Although he'd appeared as "the opera dude" on former Inspiral Carpets' organist Clint Boon's first two solo albums and several original cast recordings, 2006's Classic FM Presents Alfie Boe was the first entirely solo recording from the Blackpool-born tenor who subsequently went onto become one of the U.K.'s most popular classical crossover singers. Five years later, it's now being re-released under a different title, The Sound of Alfie Boe, presumably in a bid to capitalize on the increasing high-profile he's achieved since starring as Jean Valjean in the 25th Anniversary of the West End production of Les Miserable . Just weeks after his fourth studio album, the musical theater-based Bring You Home became his first release to enter the Top Ten, this opportunistic reissue is an ideal chance for those listeners who have only just discovered his talents to sample his more traditional operatic beginnings. Backed by the Czech BRNO Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Gareth Hancock, it's a 14-track collection, which with the exception of Sir Hubert Parry's "Jerusalem," consists of interpretations from his Italian-based repertoire which he perfected while studying at the Royal College of Music and the National Opera Studio. Alongside four arias from Puccini, including a powerful delivery of Nessun Dorma, where he more than holds his own with the more familiar Pavarotti version, and a passionate performance of Che Gelida Manina from La Boheme , there are also stirring renditions of pieces by Mozart (Dalla Sua Pace from Don Giovanni ), Verdi (La Donna e Mobile from Rigoletto ), and Donizetti (Una Furtiva Lagrima from L'elisir D'amore ), all of which showcase Boe's romantic and charismatic vocals. Boe might have made more accessible and more classical pop-oriented albums, but The Sound of Alfie Boe is arguably his most authentic to date. ~ Jon O'Brien, Rovi
