This hard-to-find title contains one dozen sides from the U.K. psychedelic/pop rockers the Smoke, and was issued on the short-lived Motown subsidiary Gull Records in 1967. Essentially, this disc is a North American version of the German long-player It's Smoke Time (1967), consisting mostly of tunes cut during the quartet's May through November 1966 recording sessions that produced their biggest hit, the acidic ode to LSD, "My Friend Jack." Smoke featured Mick Rowley (vocals), Mal Luker (guitar), Zeke Lund (bass), and Geoff Gill (drums). Stylistically, the direction that the Smoke initially explored was more akin to the aggressive mod sound closely aligned to The Who and the Kinks. However, there is a prominent pop music element unifying the catchy melodies and providing hooks hearkening back to earlier British Invasion era artists. "We Can Take It" sports a chuggun' rhythm and clever bridge reminiscent of the Hollies' "Look Through Any Window," or Spencer Davis Group's "Keep On Runnin." The practically giddy "High In A Room" furthers the mixture with equal measures of Herman's Hermits and Syd Barrett. Another prominent influence, which is especially evident throughout "Don't Lead Me On" and "I Wanna Make It With You," is the undeniable sound of American and British blue-eyed soul However, what separates them from their contemporaries is the underlying and incrementally pervasive psychedelic leanings as heard on later sides, such as the indulgent "I Would If I Could, But I Can't." [Interested parties are encouraged to locate the two-CD anthology High In A Room (2002). It includes the complete contents of this platter, as well as another 10 tracks from the 1960s, and nearly two dozen cuts from the 1970s reincarnation, such as the French-only release of the updated "My Friend Jack" -- which pales in comparison to the original.] ~ Lindsay Planer, Rovi
