INTRODUCTION - The special purpose of this Encyclopaedia is to provide under one head and at a glance all that vast amount of essential information which is required by the ever-increasing numbers - now totalling many hundreds of thousands- who, following one or other of the many branches of smallhusbandry, would derive profit, as well as pleasure, from it. In producing it I have had in mind just the type of people who read my paper, The Smallholder, so its appeal is a very, very wide one- To the poultry-keeper who runs enough fowls to supply eggs for his family and for local sale. To the poultry-farmer proper who is in poultry on a full commercial scale. To the garden-owner who would have his garden supply the family vegetable and fruit requirements. To the grower of vegetables, fruits and flowers for market sale. To the man of some acres, keeping a few cows, some pigs, some sheep, growing a moderate area of farm crops- the typical smallholder, crofter or small farmer, that is. To those who follow one of to-days many money-making side-lines-bee-keeping, rabbit-keeping, goat-keeping, and SO on. My twenty-three years work on The Small holder have to a large extent consisted of solving readers personal problems. Millions upon millions of questions have I answered. Thus I have an unrivalled knowledge as to just what the poultry-keeper, the gardener, the fruit grower, the smallholder, the small farmer and the rest will want to know at any stage in his career. That knowledge has dictated the scope of the Encyclopaedia, the kind of information that shall appear in it and the manner in which the information shall be given. My hope is that, as a result, I have produced a book to which all may turn at any time and find in a moment that which they want.
