Frank Dobie wrote, declaring to the Slaughter name as synonymous with Texas ranching history, "No cowman name especially among cow people has ever been better known as Slaughter." Slaughter also served as a courier to Sam Houston and delivered a message from Houston to William B. Travis at the Battle of the Alamo in 1836.
