Va: A History of the Tragedy, With a Notice of the Early Settlers of Jackson County Ackson county was created in 18 31, from parts of Mason, Kanawha and Wood, in compliance with an act of the General Assembly of Virginia, passed March rst of that year, and named in honor of the hero of New Orleans, who was at that time Presi dent of the United States. The present area of the county is 400 square miles. Ripley, the seat of justice of the county, was laid out as a town by Jacob Starcher, Esq., who named it in honor. Of Harry Ripley, who was drowned in Big Mill Creek, near the present site of the town, which became the seat of justice two years after the formation of the county.
