Newt Gingrich reportedly hates everything about H. L. Mencken. Hates even the mention of that name. Mencken has been dead for nearly sixty years and even today, frauds like Gingrich are that frightened of Mencken.
Too bad! Those familiar with Mencken's work can only cry in frustration because Mencken is not here to dispose of Gingrich, and Beck, and Limbaugh, and Olbermann, and the whole lot of liars, wowsers, dope addicts and bigoted, hypocrite creeps who for more than 30 years have poisoned America's political well. All of that considered, I'm certain of just one thing: that Mencken, wherever he may be, is dying once again -- this time of laughter -- at the mess we've gotten ourselves into.
Teachout's book is the only Mencken bio I've ever read. It seems to me a good one: well written, heavily sourced, fair minded, dispassionate. Recommended reading.
