for the child
A simple, short, story that is enjoyable to read.
This is the first book written by Owen Barfield and the only one for a childrens' audience. Though its easy reading and simple plot may not be for the intellectual reader (unlike his others books), its real merits lie in that it takes the form of the childs perceptions and engages their feelings. It does however possess the most important quality of a childrens literature that there is something to be learned or relearned by all ages.
This book is about many things, but one of its strongest points (and a recurring theme in the authors life in words) is that the exercise of imagination is vital to the quality of life we choose to live.
