Barcelona, 1945: Just after the war, a great world city lies in shadow, nursing its wounds, and a boy named Daniel awakes on his 11th birthday to find that he can no longer remember his mother's face. Barcelona Mystery
I ordered this because it was set in Barcelona, one of my favorite cities in the world. It got the feeling and ambiance of post-Civil-War Barcelona very well.
The heart of the mystery was a "magical realism" Library of Lost Books. Not much "magic realism" after that, but a lot of mystery, not my usual genre. But if it's yours and you like a foreign setting, you'll enjoy this book.

Shadow of the Wind
This book was an absolute treasure for avid book readers. It took place in Barcelona and you could just picture the buildings, streets and characters so clearly. The story begins with the adventure of a boy of eleven whom is given a choice of a book to choose and protect forever. He is so drawn into the story and it's author, it becomes an integral part of his growing years. Fantastic characterization and great storytelling with romance, history, mystery and intrigue.

Gothic
Not my kind of novel, though intricate, interesting prose. I couldn't get in sympathy with the protagonist, nor adjust to the fantastic setting and plot. Not for me.
