Many surprises
Thornton Wilder, mostly known for his masterpiece drama Our Town, was a world traveler and friend of many famous writers, actors and other public figures. He was a mentor to Edward Albee, an associate of Jean-Paul Sartre, enjoyed friendly conversations with Freud and often stayed at the home of Gertrude Stein. He also was part of a large and intense family including a distinguished brother, three remarkable sisters and parents he constantly sought to please. This rich volume of his letters to these people and many others, some well known and some not, trace the evolving world view and personal values of one of the 20th century's smartest and kindest writers.
