If I may say so, this book is a mixture of "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame" by Victor Hugo and the "An American Tragedy" by Theodore Dreiser, only in the Lithuanian version of it!! It is especially so because much of the action in the book is taking place in one of the most famous churches of Europe that is located in Vilnius, Lithuania. Believed to have been built on the site of worship to Lithuanian pagan goddess of love, this breathtaking Late Baroque masterpiece was commissioned to celebrate victory over the Russians in 1668 by the Grand Chief of the Lithuanian armies, who never lived to see its completion. Financed by two of his cousins and completed under several Polish and Italian master craftsmen, the rather plain exterior betrays an interior that is quite simply out of this world! Containing over 2,000 astonishing stucco statues representing miscellaneous religious and mythological scenes, of equal magnificence is the 20th-century altar containing a wooden figure of Christ, which features a real human hair brought from Rome in 1700 and the Latvian chandelier made of brass and glass beads and dating from 1905. The book is truly worth reading if you are into the genre of the historical romance. Enjoy..
