Frank Dux has certainly never been one to shy away from controversy. In fact, he appears to courts it.
An acclaimed Martial Artist (he has invented his own style of Martial Arts and was the inspiration for the Van Damme fim, Bloodsport), he has been dogged by claims that he is a fantasist for as long as he's been around, it seems.
His autobiography sees Dux open the lid on his top secret CIA career: how he was recruited, the missions he undertook, the people he met and the assassinations he carried out for his country.
As well as the CIA element we also get Dux's childhood, family life, martial arts training - including his taking part in The Kumite, an underground fighting tournament - again, another bone of contention, and his family history.
The book is - depending on your viewpoint - a fascinating account of a life of danger or the spy fantasies of a man who wishes for that kind of life.
I have no idea (does anyone but Dux?) if the stories in this book are true but it's - to me at least - almost inconsequential as it is undeniably a rattling good yarn, clearly researched and genuinely well written.
This book seems to engender strong reactions in readers. Some find it ridculously 007, some are angered, some fascinated, and some take it with a pinch a salt. I recommend the latter.
We'll probably never know if the stories within are truth or fantasy, or somewhere in between, but don't let that put you off reading them because take as pure entertainment they're well worth your time.
