Edward Balioll hereupon went through all the bounds of Scotland, placing garrisons of Englishmen in most part of all the strengths and castells of the realm, for he had them all at his commandment, five of them only excepted, which were kept by such Scotishmen, as would not renounce their allegiance promised unto king David. For Dunbreton was kept by Malcolme Fleming of Cumirnald, Lochlevin by Alane of Vtpotit, the castell of Kildrunimie, by Christine Bruse, Urquhart, by Robert Lauder, the pile of Loudopin, a strong thing of so small a compass, was in the keeping of John Thompson (who were supported with mony by Philip, the French king). These captains would by no means neither yield themselves, nor their fortresses to EdWard Balioll, but defended them to the uttermost for the behoofe of their sovereign lord and master, king David. In the mean time Philip, king of France, laboured to the pope, that he might by his authority cause the Englishmen to surcease from further vexing the Scots, by their cruell invasions made into their countrie: but when the popes ambassadors came about this matter into England, they were so little regarded, that they could not get licence to declare that message, and so were they glad to return without doing any thing in the matter whereabout they were sent. Shortly after was a parliament called at Perth, where Edward Balioll was confirmed king of Scotland, a great number of the nobles promising their solemn oaths, never to remove any rebellion against him in times to come.
