I gave him a word of exhortation before we parted. I called this morning on Mr. C. He used to visit our Mission very often, but has been absent for some time. Mrs. C. did not recognise me at first, until I told her my name and where I came from. She was then very pleased to see me. I enquired how they were getting on. The poor woman related to me all about their struggle to exist. "If I had not had this dress from your Mission, I would not have had anything to put on. I have received much kindness." I had a talk with her about our Saviour, and gave her a Gospel of Matthew in German. I promised her some clothing for herself; also shirts for her husband. I had a rather remarkable experience this afternoon in a boot Sacks in which parcels of clothing intended for the Mission can be packed may be had from the Mission House if friends will kindly apply to Miss James, 189, Whitechapel Road, E. maker's shop. While talking with the man about the Messiah, and His first coming as the Servant of God and as the Sin-bearer, a Roman Catholic priest entered. "Will you subscribe toward the education of the children?" he said to the man; then turned also to me with his little velvet bag. "What k'nd of an education will you give them?" "Oh, we will make them good citizens--good Englishmen." Anything else? He was silent. I told him who I was, and the reason why I refused to subscribe.
