Natural selection dictates that enduring changes to a species occur because of the need to adapt to changes in the environment. Elaine Morgan, author of The Descent of Woman and The Aquatic Ape, maintains that the human propensity for lower back pain, obesity, varicose veins, and other chronic conditions is the result of an earlier need for humans to survive a watery environment.

I'm studying Anthropology and Arqueology at the University of Buenos Aires. This was a very good book to make a really great debate in the clasroom. The concepts are very well presented, and the conclusions are logical and convincing.
There is one thing of this book that I don't like (and that's why I gived it only 4 stars) the Aquatic Ape theory lacks of evidence to be accepted, and the theorical ground in which is developed is really poor (in fact, seems like Elain Morgan is the only one who wrote about this!).
This is a good book to draw your own conclussions about the human evolution, but no to accept the theory of the aquatic ape. There can be a lot of reasons for this "scars" but the aquatic ape theory seems like is not the answer.
