The Scarlet Pimpernel is a story about an English nobleman who, with great daring and imagination, rescues people destined for the guillotine during the French Revolution. There is a beautiful woman, a villain, a mystery, and high adventure. I have read stories to my granddaughter ever since she was an infant. She is now 14 and I ordered this old favorite (which I enjoyed at her age) to read to her. She loved it and chose to write a story for a class assignment based on what she had learned from it about the French Revolution. Now she wants to read Dickens' Tale of Two Cities. Whenever we finished a chapter and put the book aside, my granddaughter forbid me to read ahead. I didn't, but it was hard not to. Evidently this book was such success that the author wrote a whole series of books with the same characters, but I've never seen the others.
