The sentence forces him to remain for three hours in the pillory exposed to public humiliation. Despite pressure from her to confess the name of her daughter's father, Hester refuses.Hester's husband, long missing at sea, shows up in time to witness the punishment and learn of his wife's adultery. Angered, he poses as doctor Roger Chillingworth to try to discover the lover of his wife.Chillingworth visits Hester in jail and forces her to hide her identity. Upon her release, Hester settles in the suburbs and earns her living as a seamstress. As she grows up, her daughter Pearl becomes a wayward and rebellious girl, and church members suggest that Pearl be taken away from her mother. Hester appeals to Reverend Dimmesdale in despair, and the minister convinces the governor to allow Pearl to remain in his care.
