This is the first in a series of four "new" Hopalong Cassidy novels written by Louis L'Amour. Clarence Mulford, the creator of the character and probably the best selling western author of his day, recommended L'Amour to his publishers after his retirement. L'Amour regarded them as "work for hire" and denied writing them all his life. However, he did write them and they are decent westerns. They are not "Lonesome Dove" or "Hondo" but they are professional and move along nicely. This Hoppy is still reasonably rugged, and although L'Amour writes that he has "silver hair," and rides a horse named "Topper," Hoppy still doesn't dress in black nor is he the easy going, good-natured William Boyd silver- screen Hoppy.
Next up is "The Trail to Seven Pines."
