Spring 2005. In Russia, the President is halfway through his second and last official term, and speculation is growing as to his successor. Four Russian billionaires with a vested interest in the possible outcome are meeting on a golf course in Surrey, England. On the fourth tee, a bullet from an assassin's rifle smashes into the head of one of them, Andrei Lanskoy. So begins a man hunt to find those responsible.John Matteson, working as a commercial intelligence officer in Whitehall, is drawn into the search because of his department's knowledge of the Russians' business activities. However, he begins to look beyond that brief delving deeper into the murky world of professional contract killers, with some tragic consequences. In the Kremlin, General Shepilov has the task of protecting the Presidency and now needs to know who was behind the murder in England and why. He begins by preparing a list of Russians who would be able order the murder of such a powerful man as Lanskoy, and also calls on an American, now retired from the arms business and living in Switzerland, to help him track the assassin. The interests of Matteson and the American eventually converge and the action plays out in England, Europe, Russia, and Iran.
