The Royal Naval College at Osborne on the Isle of Wight was in operation from 1903 to 1923. It complemented, and was the junior section of, the Royal Naval College at Mio. Boys went there at the age of about 12, moving on to Mil at 14. Some ten years ago, encouraged by a number of retired officers who had been at Osborne, the Society for Nautical Research initiated a study by two noted naval historians with a view to publication. The ground covered includes the inception of the Fisher-Mid scheme for officer training which led to the foundation of the college; its organization and structure; selection of entrants; the recollected experience of a wide spectrum of cadets (which forms the bulk of the book); the reasons for and the process of closure; and a summary of the end product, in the light of history.
