This book allows children to create a new perspective about other children and realize that everyone has different lives and problems. Paris, the protagonist, is put into foster care and grows up with a family that respects her and treats her as their own, but she is separated from her brother and can no longer live with her parents. Nikki Grimes does an excellent job of writing this book so children can understand such a complicated subject that many children without good parents go through. This also allows children in foster care to realize that they are not alone. Paris, at age eight, is faced with difficult situations that most children do not need to make at this age. I would use this book in a classroom to teach perspective to students, but there is also a religious aspect in the book that might arise conflict with some parents. This book also describes the conflict that Paris is faced with because she does not feel like she fits into her new family. She feels she is thrown into a predominant white neighborhood and she is a black girl. Many children go through conflicts because they do not feel they fit into any group, and this book may help some students realize it is okay to be different.
