Most Americans probably don't realize that Sweden had a colony on Delaware Bay in the 17th Century. Fewer still know that Peter Minuit of New Netherlands fame (purchaser of Manhattan) and other Dutchmen were instrumental in assisting Sweden in founding the New Sweden Company. This company established and maintained for 17 years a colony between the Dutch in New Netherlands and the English in Virginia. In 1655 Peter Stuyvesant overwhelmed the Swedes and New Sweden became Dutch. The first half of this work sets the context for a bi-lingual (Old Swedish on one page and English on the facing page) publishing of the last Swedish governor of New Sweden.
