CHARACTERISTIC APOCALYPTIC IDEAS Although most ancient apocalypses were called into being by specific historical crises, nevertheless the thinking of their authors moves within a relatively narrow circle of ideas which they share largely in common. Since they were not vigorous literary creators, they usually made little if any effort at originality either in thinking or in expression. At various times according to their several needs they chose one or another item from the common stock of apocalyptic ideas, reinterpreting them to meet the peculiar exigencies of the occasion. While individual apocalyptists sometimes exhibited remarkably vivid powers of imagination, there is among all of them a striking similarity in their fundamental notions. A belief in the peculiar inspiration of the seer as a necessary medium of revelation is a characteristic of all apocalyptic. He is thought to be an especially selected individual to whom divine secrets have been divulged and whose word is therefore unquestionably authoritative. It is also uniformly assumed that his information has been derived from deity in some unusual but peculiarly significant manner. Whether he is the Hebrew Daniel, the Greek Odysseus, or the Christian John, the experience of this favored individual is uniformly relegated to the divine sphere. Roughly speaking, the content of the seer's vision is either individualistic or cosmic in its emphasis.
