How does one describe the novels of Eva Ibbotson? She has a way of blending outlandishly caricatured, eminently familiar hero and villain types with simple, earnest storytelling. Damning with faint praise, you say? No, no, for she does it so very well that, as a reader, you allow yourself to be swept away into her unabashedly modern fairy tale world. And her YA romance novels are nothing if not that. They don't contain the usual trappings of fairy tales, for the characters are real people (even if many of them hold titles in the peerage or are fabulously wealthy), and there is no magic (unless you count True Love, the Arts, and the Sciences). But the spirit of great fairy tales lives on in these novels; in fact, I think Ibbotson cannot help but build her stories that way, set as they are against the mythic Austrian and English countrysides. This new addition about a princess who'd rather be a stagehand doesn't hold any more surprises than a familiar bedtime story, and therein lies its charm.
This isn't literature with a capital L, but I for one couldn't help but grin appreciatively when I read that one of the characters gazed at her own reflection "with the sense of homecoming experienced by a great pianist as he lowers his hands on to the keyboard of a perfectly tuned Steinway." Heh heh. I rest my case.
