Excerpt from The Regyster Booke of Chrystenynges, Maryages and Buryalls of the Parish of St. Alphaege in the Cyttye of Canterburye, 1558-1800 When I issued my Transcript of the Register of St. Peter's, Canterbury, in March last, I hardly hoped to issue another to equal that In interest and importance. But as this Register exceeds that In the number of its entries, so, I venture to think, it surpasses it in Interest, as it contains more County names and many more entries relating to Foreign settlers in Canterbury. How closely these latter clustered round the ancient parish church may be seen by running the eye down the Index of Names; and how widely the parish is connected with the County of Kent may be seen by a reference to the Index of Places mentioned in this volume. It is still a mystery to me why so many came from other parts of the county to be married in Canterbury. Various explanations have been offered, but none are, in my Opinion, satisfactory; and I have none to give. Two hundred years ago the church was, doubtless, more attractive than it has been during the last twenty or thirty years but a new era has dawned upon it; it has emerged from the silence of neglect and decay, and I am fain to hope that in years to come it will occupy the position in Canterbury which it occupied in years gone by, and will become, if not that questionable blessmg, a fashionable' church, yet that admitted blessing, a living church, with a living congregation. To compile this Volume I have used eight Register Books, and every entry here set forth has been copied by mv own hand, and compared by myself with the Transcripts, as far as they exist; I now proceed to describe these Register Books more or less particularly.
