Seller's Description:
New. Trade paperback (US). 112 p. Audience: General/trade. Raised on a ranch in northern California, Jody is well-schooled in the hard work and demands of a rancher's life. He is used to the way of horses, too; but nothing has prepared him for the special connection he will forge with Gabilan, the hot-tempered pony his father gives him. With Billy Buck, the hired hand, Jody tends and trains his horse, restlessly anticipating the moment he will sit high upon Gabilan's saddle. But when Gabilan falls ill, Jody discovers there are still lessons he must learn about the ways of nature and, particularly, the ways of man.

Steinbeck's "The Red Pony" is not a Classic Book to be missed....Go out and get it now.Heartwarming,sad,wonderful!!!.....Fantastic characters...some kind...some not so kind, but the main reason you read this book is because of the horses in it.Not to be missed if you've loved horses all your life.

Disturbing
I know a lot of children read this story, but it gave me nightmares. A pony is sick and they have to cut a hole in the neck so the pony can breath. The passage where the boy has to keep the hole clean just creeped me out. I still get creeped out just thinking about it. Dispite the creepy sick pony section the book is neatly written. Its a coming of age and buddy book rolled into one.
