At 30, Virginia Pearson was a bit old to play a convent-bred girl in this murder mystery, something which critics duly noted. She's more credible a bit later on in the film as the proprietor of her dead father's gambling hall. Pauline Cheraud (Pearson) returns from the convent to discover that her father, Emil (Joseph Smiley), has gone broke and to keep the money flowing in has turned their home into a gambling establishment. Pauline begs him to stop and finally he agrees -- but the next day he is found dead in the library. Three men -- including Jimmie Dreen, the man Pauline loves (Victor Sutherland) -- become suspects because they all visited Cheraud the night before. In the belief that the killer always returns to the scene of the crime, Pauline keeps the gambling hall open and carefully watches all the suspects.
