All I insist upon is, that with the present size of newspapers, a size which at the present price cannot be increased, the pressure of advertisements, the most profitable source of a newspaper's revenue, does make, and will make, it impossible for newspapers to give such reports of the proceedings of Parliament as are required by Parliament and by the country. ON FREE TRADE. A PROTECTIVE POLICY IN THE ENGLISH COLONIES. At a banquet given at Melbourne in June, 1877, in honour of Mr. John Young, the Canadian representative at the Industrial Exhibition held at Sydney in that year, some of the speeches turned on the subject of Free Trade, and Sir Charles Gavan Duffy, Speaker of the Victoria Legislative Assembly, said that, seeing that the tendency of opinion in that colony was in favour of Protection of some sort, he had consulted three eminent gentlemen in England--John Bright, John Stuart Mill, and Thomas Carlyle. He said to John Bright: ' " All my life will be spent in Australia. I am a Free Trader, as you know. They are going to have a protective policy there. Am I to retire, therefore, from public life?" John Bright, a practical man, said, " If there are particular industries that can flourish in that country, and if it is the determination of the people to encourage them, I would grant bonuses on certain industries liberally, in order to promote them; or I would come to an agreement with the Protectionists to protect a certain number of articles for a certain...
