Dr. Lee also seems to regard it as "equally" awful in me to have addressed my hearers in my Sermon thus: "My dear brethren." But is not this the ordinary style of pulpit address? Is it generally understood to import a belief in the converted and holy character of the persons thus addressed? Yet, among Dissenters, this phrase is more commonly used in a discriminating sense, marked by the connexion. And further (though it was not likely that a Cambridge Professor should be aware of this), our Monthly Meeting congregations consist almost exclusively of persons who make a credible profession of serious piety, and a considerable number of ministers. Indeed, I believe that, in the only two instances in which this mode of address occurs, it was especially directed to my brethren in the sacred ministry. XIX. That any man who is duly qualified by natural talents and their appropriate culture, in union with the indispensable qualification, sincere and zealous piety, to be introduced into the work of the ministry, must have the ability requisite for conducting the public prayers of a congregation in the free and extemporary manner. Leaving these positions to a special discussion on each case, if my correspondent shall think proper, I pass on to other matter. I think that I may not unreasonably ask my respected friend, by what process of self-obscuring he could write page after page, seeming to represent me as decrying disinterestedness and liberality in the cause of religion, and as implicitly providing lurking-holes for covetous and selfish men?
