This identification of typewriting, and the determination of the date of a typewritten document from the typewriting itself, still are rare performances and to the uninformed the writing machine seems to afford an excellent opportunity for concealment, and, it is altogether probable that, in very many instances it has in fact been an effective ally of fraud. Many typewritten "Exhibit A's" and "Exhibit B's" that grew out of conditions that at the time aroused justifiable suspicion are no doubt lying uninvestigated among the records of old cases in court houses and in private law offices. The whole question is so comparatively new that even many lawyers and public officers are not aware of the possibilities of the subject and the extent to which the investigation of typewriting has been carried. More and more as the years go by, the typewriting of fraudulent papers is becoming the key thal unlocks the secrets of clever conspiracies. As is well known, typewriting itself is a comparatively new thing in the history of documents. The first practical writing machine came into limited use in 1874, but the machine was in a crude and experimental state until 1879 when the first practical machine was put upon the market. It is common knowledge that from that time there has been a constantly increasing use of the typewriter in the business and legal world. As the great bulk of business correspondence and of legal documents came more and more to be written on the typewriter, it was inevitable that the machine would be employed for fraudulent purposes, and these questions have more and more been arising regarding the condition, origin, and date of suspected typewritten papers.
