The second of Carlton's three-volume series of music from The Prisoner is perhaps the least essential of the trio, since it contains music from episodes in the middle of the program's 17-installment run. That means that File #1 and File #3 have music from the very most dramatic arrival and escape episodes. If you're the kind of fan who wants soundtrack music from The Prisoner in the first place, however, you'll likely want all three volumes rather than one or two, and The Prisoner: File #2 does have its share of pieces that are fine, and well above the standard of TV serials, action/suspense or otherwise. Some of them are goofy incidental backdrops that aren't much fun to hear on their own, even if they made sense when complementing specific scenes; some others are effective eerie suspense bits that are nonetheless close to the standard for the action/suspense genre. Others, though, are rewarding or challenging, like the hypnotic deep-chamber freeze ambience of "Speedlearn Broadcast," the almost tongue-in-cheek happy-go-lucky Latinate swinging '60s jazz of "Exam Results," the spooky theremin-textured Muzak of "Adrift at Sea," the manic harpsichord of "Angry Mob," and the almost chamber classical music of some other passages. Some of these selections were actually used in more than one episode, and those occurrences are duly noted by the detailed track listings. Note also that the version of the classic main title theme of the series on this disc is (unlike everything else on the CD) not from the original television soundtrack, but is a 1996 recording by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
