But it may nearly always be seen that the meaning given above is the fundamental one, and that the Dative is the case of interest; and as interest may be either agreeable or the reverse, the common expression, Dative of advantage or disadvantage Dalivus commodi aut incommodi), will be found to be generally applicable. THE DATIVE GOVERNED BY VERBS. 818.--Rule XXVIII. All verbs govern the dative of the object or end, to which the action or state expressed by them is directed as matter of interest; as, Firm venit imperio, An end has come to the empire. Animas redil hostibus, Courage returns to the enemy. Tibi seris, libi metis, You sow for yourself, you reap for yourself. 819.--Explanation.--This rule may be considered as general, applying to all cases in which a verb is followed by a dative. When the verb is transitive active, it governs also its immediate object in the accusative (712). If intransitive, it will be followed by a dative only. This rule, being applicable to all cases in which a dative follows a verb, is too general to be useful, as it could not be applied correctly without much discrimination. It will, therefore, be of more advantage, when it can be done, to apply the special rules comprehended under it as follows: SPECIAL RULES. 820.--Rule XXIX. Sum, and its compounds (except possum), govern the dative; as, Praefuit excrcUul, He commanded the army. Debemus omnibus prodesse, We ought to do good to all. 821.--Rule XXX....

Actually quite good for its age, but the former owner when writing his name on end pages with a faulty pen dripped a bit; the upper corner of the back end page is torn away; page preceding t.p. appears to have been torn out. Fortunately the sloppy scholar must have had little interest in the contents of the book, so the 312 p. of text, the appendices and the publisher's catalog at the end are all immaculate and unmarked. Binding is firm; leather boards with gilt lettering "Bullion's Latin Grammar" on black patch on spine is bumped at corners, and rubbed at crown and foot but still handsome despite an occasional driblet of ink.
