Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) said: "Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards."
For those not familiar with the work of Kierkegaard, the Danish philosopher, theologian and writer, who is widely regarded as being the father of existentialist philosophy, this is an excellent starting point. The introduction by Alexander Dru, the translator and editor, should be of special interest to all Kierkegaard's followers.
Kierkegaard's views and thoughts on a variety of subjects, particularly consumerism and materialism, are timeless and remarkable. He was only 42 when he died.

powerful thinker
Kierkegaard's brillient mind spills out in this little book, his critique of modern culture in his time is still very relevent today. One of the main themes is the timeless conflict that occurs between the individual and the pressure form the "crowd" (modern cluture etc.). There are some "technical terms" used which have very specific meaning in existential philosophy but the meaning is not lost without knowledge of these as such.
Over all a powerful brillient individual who shares some very insightful and enlightening thoughts, a good short read.
