The year's celebration of Hanukkah (December 25, 2024 -- January 2, 2025) had concluded before I had found and read I.B. Singer's "The Power of Light: Eight Stories for Hanukkah". A book group in which I sometimes participate had selected the book for discussion. "The Power of Light" was written to be read aloud, one for each night of the holiday. It is a short, magical collection of eight children's stories with equally magical colored illustrations by Ilene Lieblich (1923-2008), an artist who frequently worked with Singer. The stories are set in Singer's native Poland and in Russia with one story set in Brooklyn. Hanukkah is known as the "Festival of Light". Light, faith, love, and mysticism illuminate these little stories which will fascinate adults as well as children.
Singer was not a traditional religious believer, but hints of transcendence and mystery shine through his work and these stories which suggest how light and faith persist in the face of trouble. The title story, for example tells of how two children, David, 14, and Rebecca, 13, escaped from the Nazi's and the ruins of the Warsaw Ghetto to the resistance and ultimately to Israel with the inspiration of the light of a candle. The story "The Squire" tells of the prophet Elijah appearing in one of his many manifestation to a poor Jewish family on a Hanukkah evening. The story "Menashe and Rachel" tells of two blind children in a poorhouse in Lublin who tells stories to each other and who see with an inner light what cannot be seen with the eyes. "A Parakeet Named Dreidel" is set in Brooklyn and tells the story of a parakeet found on Hanukkah who illuminates the lives of his new family and serves as well as a matchmaker.
Although I didn't read this delightful book for Hanukkah, it is a treat for any time and for readers of any age.
