Economic integration in North America, Western Europe and in the Asia-Pacific Rim has emerged as one of the major issues of the 20th century. Culminating in the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the move towards continental economic integration has become central to the futures of Mexico, the United States and Canada. This volume analyzes the economic, social, political and environmental implications of NAFTA from a broad range of critical perspectives. Written as NAFTA was being negotiated, and completed after the August 1992 agreement, this volume reflects the diverse themes and debates that unfolded in the three countries during the period. The chapters deal with the political and economic background that led to the initiation of negotiations - in particular, the Canada-US Free Trade Agreement implemented in 1989, the shift in economic strategy in Mexico during the 1980s, and the drift toward hemispheric regionalism in the United States. The chapters are unified by a sceptical view of the management of economic integration in North America.
