Excerpt from The Polish Peasant in Europe and America, Vol. 2: Monograph of an Immigrant Group All this shows no lack of maternal feeling. On the con trary, she shows that feeling on the occasion of her-daughter's death. But she has a powerful personality, and she has probably been independent for a long time; she has governed her environment, and she does not wish to fall into the position of an old, helpless, and moneyless mother, supported by her children. And as having some money herself is the only way of keeping her independence, she endeavors by all means to get it. As a woman, she has not the same tradition of familial solidarity as men; she is not the head of the family, the rightful manager of the common property; there are no rights and responsibilities of leadership to set limits to her egotism. The family-group as a distinct whole does not exist for her; she means to deal always only with individuals and opposes to them her own individuality. In so far the case is different from that of the old Wroblewski, who shows a much more far-going moral degeneration, since he is the head of a family and nevertheless breaks ofl all relations with his sons.
